My name is Harriet Fisher and I am writing to you on behalf of the Ottawa Youth Engagement Committee (OYEC). OYEC is a formal partnership between the City of Ottawa and Youth Ottawa. This Committee works to provide a youth perspective to city projects and to help the cities overall youth consultation process. The committee is made up of youth between the ages of 16-25 with diverse backgrounds, skills, and goals. We aim to close as many community gaps as we can by doing work with at-risk, unemployed, and marginalized youth as well as promote progressive initiatives to strengthen our community. OYEC has identified three main priorities for the year and one of them is addressing Sexual Health in Ottawa. Due to recent changes to the Ontario Health and Physical Education curricula, some teachers and students are unsure about receiving a comprehensive understanding of: consent, sexual orientation, gender identity, cyber-sex, and other pressing issues. OYEC is planning to hold an inaugural Sexual Health Education Forum in Canada’s capital in the Fall of 2019. We are also partnering with Ottawa Public Health and will be offering anonymous same-day testing options during the forum. Our hope is to bring together students and to have participation from all of the major school boards. Sexual health is a a public health issue and we strongly believe that youth have the right to a comprehensive education, allowing them to make decisions through the lens of harm reduction. The purpose of is to provide comprehensive, shame free education through improving the general knowledge related to STBBIs (Sexually transmitted blood-borne infections), general reproductive health information, and connecting youth with local organizations. The event is broken into 7 major parts: an opening keynote; morning breakout sessions; lunch and info fair (with opportunities to table); a world cafe; afternoon breakout sessions; an evening panel; and a closing activity. This community initiative is designed to make a lasting impact by changing the way young people interact with the organizations around them and how they seek help in the future. It is supported by the City of Ottawa, Ottawa Public Health, Local organizations, and the Canadian Service Corps among other supporters!

I am contacting you today to request your support in the form of an in-kind donation to the event, as we are a youth-lead, nonprofit event.

The event will take place on November 17, 2019 at 110 Laurier Ave W, Ottawa, ON K1P 1J1. If you are available and interested in participating in this event, please respond to this email and I will set up a time for us to discuss your participation! Thanks in advance!

All the best,

Harriet Fisher
